The people. About 50,000 people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for a week to go a little nuts, and express themselves and rely on themselves and others in a way that one generally doesn’t get a chance to do. Sometimes without clothing.

Burning Man in Kinoma Play

Like great stories? Then you’ll really like The Moth, new to Kinoma Guide and available for free (no subscription fees!) to everyone with Kinoma Play.

“The Moth” was founded by a writer who wanted to recreate the sultry summer evenings of his native St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to tell each other their best stories on his friend’s porch.

When he moved to New York he invited friends over to tell and hear stories in an effort to rekindle the sense of connection he had felt sharing stories with friends back home, and “The Moth” was born.

The Moth Podcast — Every week, The Moths folks post some of their favorites stories among the thousands of stories they’ve recorded over the last 10 years. Typically 5 to 17 minutes, they’re sometimes funny, occasionally sad, often poignant. Since they’re culled from many years worth of archives, the sound quality varies.

The Moth Mainstage — Selected stories from the original Moth series.

The Moth Outreach — Selected stories from storytelling workshops for students and marginalized adults.

The future of Kinoma’s Palm OS and desktop products

Since the launch of the original Kinoma Player in 2002, Kinoma has led the way in mobile media technology. The platform first established in Kinoma Player lives on not only in Kinoma’s flagship product — Kinoma Play — but also in products from companies including Sony and Sling Media.

As Palm OS fades into the sunset, we’ve had a lot of folks ask what our plans are. Today we’re announcing that we’ll be ending sales and support for Palm OS products in order to focus completely on current phone OSs.

If you’re a Palm OS user, here’s what you need to know: Kinoma will be ending sales of Kinoma Player 4 EX on 8/1/2010. We’ll continue to offer support, including any necessary security and critical fixes, until 10/1/2010. Effective 10/1/2010, Kinoma will offer only community-based support Kinoma Player 4 EX via our forum at forum.kinoma.com.

We’re also ending sales and support for Kinoma Producer for Windows and Mac OS on the same schedule.

We’d like to thank everyone who’s supported these products, and helped pioneer the now-common sight of people enjoying music, movies, podcasts and audiobooks on phones. You were ahead of your time, and when you upgrade your phone we hope you’ll choose Kinoma Play.

Google Reader update for Kinoma Play now available — speedier, more compatible

One of the apps we use every day is Kinoma Play’s Google Reader app. It’s a fast, easy way to keep up with your favorite sites, and the full-text searching makes it incredibly easy to find posts on the exact topic you want no matter what feed or folder they’re in.

The reason we keep the word “Beta” painted on is that Google hasn’t quite settled on its “API”, which is what software developers like Kinoma use to access your Google Reader feeds. That means that they can change it anytime without notice.

That’s exactly what just happened, and so today we have a shiny new update of the Google Reader app for you!

Cool! Anything else?

Yes! In a word, speed. The app now opens instantly, and you can start using it even while it’s syncing with the Google Reader service.

How to update Kinoma Play’s Google Reader app

Go to Kinoma Play’s Home screen, then choose Get Apps > Google Reader and update.

177 (live!) London traffic cameras now available for your phone with Kinoma Play

Did you know there are hundreds of webcams available in Kinoma Guide? In Travel & Weather you’ll find webcams that let you travel virtually to places like:

Zoos
Universities
Vacation spots
Museums and galleries

Today we updated Kinoma Guide with London traffic cameras — 177 of them! They’re all over the city at key sites, giving you a live pictures of what’s happening on London’s streets.

These cameras are managed by Transport for London, the government body responsible for managing most aspects of the Greater London transport system.

If you travel through London, these cameras can be very helpful for following traffic and planning routes accordingly. Otherwise, they’re a great view into everyday life in one of the world’s greatest cities.
