Laugh until you cry with The Onion on Kinoma Play

June 9th, 2011

The spiritual mother of shows like The Daily Show, The Onion is a powerhouse of news parody and satire. Whenever you need a laugh, “America’s Finest News Source” is just seconds away in Kinoma Play.

The Onion’s come a long way from roots as a slim paper for University of Wisconsin–Madison students. Once The Onion introduced their website in the mid-90s, it soon because a cultural force. A Comedy Central buyout gave The Onion the ability to bring their unique brand of humor to other mediums, including the Onion News Network and Onion News Radio that you can enjoy in Kinoma Play today.

In April 2009 The Onion was awarded a Peabody Award, which noted that “the satirical tabloid’s online send-up of 24-hour cable-TV news was hilarious, trenchant and not infrequently hard to distinguish from the real thing.”. In fact, wackos and the mainstream media alike have a history of mistaking articles from The Onion as actual news.

Sounds great! What’s available?

  • 24 Hour News — Completely unbiased reporting of national and international fake news, this parody of 24-hour news channels presents important stories like, “Sources Warn Miley Cyrus Will Be Depleted By 2013″.
  • A.V. Talk — The web’s smartest movie and television review show, hosted by the editors of Onion’s A.V. Club. With new episodes on Friday, A.V. Talk is your required viewing for the weekend.
  • A.V. Talk [Large] – A very-high-quality edition of A.V. Talk, perfect if you’re on Wi-Fi and have a fast device.
  • In the Know — A parody of Sunday morning pundit shows where a current political event is examined earnestly by a panel from completely bizarre angles.
  • Onion News Network — All videos by the Onion, including videos from The A.V. Club.
  • The Onion Radio News — America’s Finest News Podcast, covering stories like, “Rich First-Grader Buys Whole Sheet Of Gold Stars”. Hosted by old-school (and fictional) newscaster Doyle Redland.
  • Today Now! — A parody of morning lifestyle and news programs complete with smarmy, clueless hosts, covering human-interest stories like, “Being A Detective Who Talks To Ghosts Not As Exciting As TV”.

Where do I find it?

You can find The Onion in Kinoma Guide, in Providers > The Onion. Or, just search for “onion” or one of the shows above.

Enjoy!

As usual, this new Kinoma Guide content is free for all Kinoma Play customers.

New! Enjoy SModcast Network shows and S.I.R. Radio with Kinoma Play

May 17th, 2011

[Content note: These shows are for grown-ups. Like Kevin Smith’s movies and Q&As, the SModcast Network shows use strong language and often have adult themes.]

It all started with a little podcast called SModcast. In 2007, filmmaker Kevin Smith (the “S” in SModcast) persuaded his long-time producer and friend Scott Mosier (the “M”) to join him in funny and candid conversations about life, pop culture, fears (e.g. sharks) and dreams.

iTunes named it one of the best new podcasts of the year.

Four years and 169 SModcasts later, Smith now presides over a modest podcast empire with a bunch of shows. Several were featured on iTunes’ Best Podcasts of 2010. The brand-new SModcast Internet Radio (S.I.R.) live broadcasts 4 hours of original programming per day.

And now you can now listen to SModcast Network shows and S.I.R. in Kinoma Play.

Snoochie boochies!

In addition to the live S.I.R. stream, these SModcast Network shows are now available in Kinoma Guide:

  • Bagged and Boarded – Matt Cohen, Brendan Creecy and guests ponder and pontificate the finer points of existence, including movies and comic books
  • Blow Hard – Listen weekly as the legendary blowhard Malcolm Ingram threatens to remove a pinky, while Kevin holds the knife
  • Hollywood Babble-On – There’s no business like Ho(llywood) business, as discussed by Ralph Garman and Kevin Smith
  • Jay & Silent Bob Get Old – Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith fight a losing battle against adulthood
  • Plus One – Kevin Smith Jedi-mind-tricked Jennifer Schwalbach into marriage, and they talk about it here
  • Puck Nuts – Hockey fans deal with the Devils and the NHL
  • Red State Of The Union Q&As – Learn about Kevin Smith’s horror flick Red State direct from the filmmakers
  • SMinterview with @ThatKevinSmith – Interviews with interesting people
  • SModcast – Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier ARE…the original SModcast
  • SMovieMakers – Kevin Smith talks with other filmmakers
  • Tell ‘Em Steve Dave – Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson mutter and bicker, entertainingly

Plus, listen to archives of these S.I.R. shows:

  • Jay & Silent Bob Get Jobs [Archive] – Every day Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes broadcast live with news, guests, and listener calls. Listen live daily at 10am PST/1pm EST on S.I.R.
  • Plus One Per Diem [Archive] – Every morning Kevin Smith and wife Jen Schwalbach bring you a morning show from their home. Listen live daily at 8am PST/11am EST on S.I.R.

XLV ads…right now!">Play and share Super Bowl XLV ads…right now!

February 5th, 2011

Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday. The championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The highest level of professional football in the United States.

People watch the Super Bowl for two things: (1) The game, and (2) the ads. And right now, you can watch, re-watch and share the commercials of Super Bowl XLV on your phone with Kinoma Play.

This year we’ve got even more Super Bowl commercials than we had last year — over 50 — and the game isn’t even until tomorrow.

Go to Kinoma Guide > Sports & Recreation > Super Bowl Commercials 2011 to enjoy these future classics:

  • “The Force” — Already considered a favorite, this spot features a pint-sized Darth Vader who uses (or at least tries to use) the Force.
  • “Bumblebee” — Seemingly ad for a local Al’s Chevy Dealership, until a car on the lot does something unexpected.
  • “Severance Package” — The surprising things people will do to get fired for a severance package of “lite” beer.
  • “One Epic Ride” — Let me know if you’ve heard this one before: A policeman, villain, Poseidon, an alien and an ancient chief travel through space and time to get their hands on a car…
  • “Miss Evelyn” — Two guys come up with the perfect Camaro ad.
  • A bunch of funny viewer-created ads (granted, some of these viewers have mad skills) for Doritos and Pepsi MAX.
  • Trailers and teasers for a upcoming movies, including Cowboys and Aliens, Drive Angry 3D, Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, Thor, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.
  • Lots of car ads, and much more!

Be sure to click “More” to see all of them, or just start the first and let ‘em roll. We’ll update the list as more ads become available online.
