Recap: Kinoma at SXSWi 2011

March 22nd, 2011

Y’all, we had a wonderful time at “South By”!

South by Southwest Interactive was an amazing opportunity to talk with hundreds of developers about our new, open Kinoma app platform, and to introduce thousands of non-developers to Kinoma Play’s awesomesauce.

(Are you a mobile app developer? Couldn’t make it to SXSWi? No problem — you can still sign up for early access to the Kinoma SDK here. )

The booth

The Marvell booth was absolutely thrumming with guests.

Visitors could start at the front counter, where we had a bunch of Marvell-powered ASUS phones running Kinoma Play for Android.

Or they could just wander on in anywhere to talk with us and relax in our comfy chairs.

The booth even had built-in whiteboards where people could sketch the kinds of mobile apps they want to see, or even make for themselves.

The panel

Our own Peter Hoddie, VP of Kinoma at Marvell, spoke at a panel called “Platform Success: Earning Developers’ Trust, Hearts and Minds”. The panel talked about how developers can thrive in mobile.

Moderated by Harry McCracken, the panel also featured Brandon Watson, director for Windows Phone 7; James Keller, co-founder of Small Society; and Ben Satterfield, 2008 and 2009 SXSW Web Award Winner.

The party

Finally, we invited a few hundred of our newest friends to a rooftop party overlooking Austin’s historic 6th Street.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to talk with us.

We learned a lot (we hope you did too!), and we’re excited to get the Kinoma platform into your hands and hear what you think.

What Just Happened? What You Need to Know About Kinoma’s Biggest. Week. Ever.

February 17th, 2011

If you follow Kinoma on Facebook or Twitter, you know that we made some game-changing announcements at this week’s Mobile World Congress show.

For everybody that’s not yet on either Facebook or Twitter, here’s what you need to know…

Kinoma, Inc. is no more. Long live Kinoma!

Marvell is a leading semiconductor company, which means that they make chips. Lots of chips. They shipped over a billion chips last year, with a focus on mobile and lifestyle computing.

Marvell needed an advanced software platform to complement their hardware platforms — and that’s where we came in. Marvell purchased Kinoma, Inc. in late 2010, and this week we announced the acquisition and introduced Kinoma — a new, open-source platform for the next generation of apps.

What they’re saying

The press, analysts and bloggers had some great things to say about our announcements. A few highlights:

Kinoma delivers on the promise so many companies are chasing — a thoughtfully designed, beautiful user interface that enhances user experience. The capabilities of this platform are crucial for creating a new class of connected devices with a simple, consistent user experience and access to the content they need, no matter where they are.” — Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies

Kinoma now has a practically infinite playground, to take one of the slickest touch-based interfaces I’ve ever seen, pointing it first at smartphone and tablets, and later, taking it downmarket to practically every screen you’ve seen that begs for an overhaul.” — Louis Gray

Marvell today introduced Kinoma, a software platform for mobile devices and more — everything from ‘smart appliances’ to ‘smart furnishings’. […] ‘Fast. Open. Beautiful,’ goes the tagline of a new promotional video. And we’d agree with all three.” — Fast Company

On Monday, Marvell announced they were acquiring Kinoma. To the man on the street, that sounds more like the plot of a comic book and not the merging of some pretty serious players in the mobile industry, which is what it actually is.” — TechCrunch

We had some wonderful conversations with folks during the show, and were gratified that most people immediately understood why the Kinoma platform matters as device platforms and form factors proliferate.

But I love Kinoma Play!

Cool, because we’re happy to announce that an incredible new version of Kinoma Play will be available soon.

For a peek at the all-new Kinoma Play, take a look at this new video we created for Mobile World Congress:

Android users can sign up for the Kinoma Play for Android beta right now at http://kinoma.com/. (Windows Mobile and Symbian/S60 users: We haven’t forgotten about you, and we’ll announce betas for those platforms on Facebook or Twitter first.)

Thank you

Our sincere thanks and gratitude to you, our customer. We literally couldn’t have gotten to this point without your support.

With this week’s announcements, the future of Kinoma technologies is blindingly bright. Come along as we help software and hardware developers build a world of Kinoma-powered stuff!
