The Windows Mobile grade-and-pave (or, how to make your phone work like new again)

December 3rd, 2009

Does your phone feel a bit janky lately? Maybe a little slower than it did when it was new?

One of the great things about Windows Mobile is its openness — users can install whatever they like, and developers aren’t limited by artificial restrictions. But with great power comes great responsibility, and unfortunately not all software is engineered to the high standards of Kinoma Play.

Why do we care? Because Kinoma Play creates maximum joy when your phone is performing at its best.

How to make your phone like new again

When your phone’s acting up, you can get like-new performance again by doing what we call a grade-and-pave. To do a grade-and-pave:

  1. Sync your phone’s data to your PC
  2. Wipe your phone
  3. Install any available phone updates
  4. Install your apps and sync again to restore your data

Typically, the whole process takes about 30 minutes.

#1 — Sync

Sync your phone to your PC. Make sure Windows Mobile Device Center is configured to sync your contacts, calendar, tasks, notes, and everything else you might want to save.

The contents of your Storage Card shouldn’t be affected by a grade-and-pave. But backups are A Good Thing, and this is a great time to copy the contents of your Storage Card to a PC.

Alternatively, you can use Microsoft My Phone to sync your phone to save your phone’s data online instead of on your PC. (We haven’t personally tried this, so be careful out there!)

#2 — Wipe your phone

This is known as doing a “hard reset”, and generally involves holding down 1–2 buttons while you doing a reset or turning on your phone. Consult your manual for details, or search for “hard reset [your phone model]” for instructions.

Note: This will delete everything from your phone, including Kinoma Play!

#3 — Install any available phone updates

If there are any available updates for your phone, now’s the time to install them. We recommending checking the support sites for both your network operator (e.g. Sprint) and the phone maker (e.g. HTC).

#4 — Install your apps and sync

Rather than automatically installing everything that was on your phone before the grade-and-pave, we recommend installing only the software you actively use.

To get a fresh Kinoma Play installer, go to http://kinoma.com/support/ and click “Need your installer or purchase key?” You’ll be prompted for your registration email address, and the URL for the current installer will be sent there.

Once you’ve reinstalled your apps, sync your phone again to restore the data you sync’d to your PC in step #1.

Enjoy!

A grade-and-pave gets you a like-new phone experience without spending anything but a little time.

New! Now Mac users can stream video, music and pictures from home to phone

November 19th, 2009

I love being able to stream my entire personal media library on-demand. Not just because my collection takes up more space than any SD card could ever hold, but also because I don’t have to worry about “syncing” my phone every time I leave the house.

Our customers seem to agree, and that’s why we built support for Orb — a free personal media server that runs on your PC — into Kinoma Play, Kinoma FreePlay and Kinoma Player 4 EX.

The only problem? Until very recently, Orb was only available for Windows. Today I’m glad to share that Orb is now available for Mac OS X.

Listen to SKY.fm + Digitally Imported with Kinoma Play: 60+ stations, aacPlus

November 2nd, 2009

Kinoma Guide’s SKY.fm category is a great collection of streaming radio stations. There’s lots of genres, and yet the refined selection makes it easy to find the kind of music you’re in the mood for.

We’ve just released a new Kinoma Guide update that adds all currently-available SKY.fm and DI.fm (Digitally Imported) stations in all available stream formats — including aacPlus.

aacPlus?

AAC is the standards-based successor to MP3. It offers far higher-quality than MP3 at similar bitrates.

Kinoma Play is the only mobile player that supports not just AAC, but also the even more-advanced aacPlus and aacPlus v2 (a.k.a. HE-AAC and HE-AAC v2) formats.

The SKY.fm streams are available in both MP3 and aacPlus formats. Even though the aacPlus streams are 75% smaller (!) than the 96 kbps MP3 streams, they still sound great. Such a low-bitrate stream makes for great reliability, even in very poor network conditions.

Wow, great! Where do I find it?

You can find SKY.fm in Kinoma Guide > Radio.

Got favorite podcasts? Radio stations? Video streams?

Send a URL and short description to content@kinoma.com and we’ll add them to Kinoma Guide for everyone to enjoy!

  • Big R Radio Halloween Channel — A streaming radio station featuring songs like Ghostbusters, Elvis singing (You’re The) Devil in Disguise, Neil Sedaka’s Little Devil…you get the idea.
  • Coverville Annual Halloween Shows — Spooky cover versions of songs from some of the podcast’s annual Halloween shows, including Dead Man’s PartyGhostbustersThe Theme From “The Munsters”, Monster MashThriller, and selections from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
  • Halloween Atmosphere — Play this streaming radio station for a spine-curdling soundtrack to your Halloween activities. (Dare you to listen to it in the dark!)
  • Halloween Radio and Halloween Oldies — More streaming spook-tastic Halloween radio.
  • Thriller — Not only do you get the great cover version above, but you also get the entire official Michael Jackson video opus. This scared the candy corn out of my sister and me when we were kids, and it’s still frighteningly fun.
  • War of the Worlds — This is the entire 1938 radio dramatization that shocked the world and created nationwide panic among confused listeners, many who missed the warning that it was a dramatization since they tuned in after listening to Charlie McCarthy on another station. For those people, it felt like the beginning of the end.

Have a happy, safe Halloween!
