Open URL tips and tricks

June 24th, 2011

Kinoma Play puts an amazing amount of great content at your fingertips. Even if you stick to Kinoma Guide, you can enjoy something new every day and never play the same thing twice.

But what if you want to play something that isn’t in Kinoma Guide or Kinoma Play’s other apps? Open URL to the rescue!

To use Open URL, just open the menu from the Home screen and choose Home > Open URL.

Supported formats

The powerful-but-unassuming Open URL feature allows you to open links in any format supported by Kinoma Play. And there’s a lot of them…

  • Video — Kinoma Play supports MPEG-4 Video SP, AVC/H.264 BP (Baseline Profile) and MP (Main profile) video, 3GPP (same as MPEG-4), Flash Video (Sorenson Spark codec), QuickTime Movie (same as MPEG-4) and Windows Media 9 (WMV9 codec) video formats. For streaming, Kinoma Play supports HTTP, RTSP, and MMS streaming.
  • Audio — Kinoma Play supports MP3, AAC (iTunes), aacPlus, Flash Video (MP3 in an FLV), Windows Media Audio 9, and Audible audio, plus FLAC lossless audio and uncompressed WAV. For streaming, Kinoma Play supports HTTP, RTSP, MMS and Audible streaming. It also supports all popular playlist formats, including ASX (Windows Media), M3U, PLS, PVX and XSPF.
  • Pictures & Images — Kinoma Play supports JPEG, PNG and BMP image formats, plus QuickTime VR panoramas, either standalone or in RSS photostreams.
  • Playlists — Kinoma Play supports all popular playlist formats, including M3U playlists (.m3u), Playlists (.pls), Windows Media playlists (.asx), RSS and OPML.

As you can see, that covers almost every popular format used on the web today.

Tips and tricks

  • Use a URL shortener like goo.gl or bit.ly to make a short URL that’s easy to enter on your phone.
  • Or avoid typing altogether. Copy a link from your email client or browser, then use Open URL — its “clipboard auto-paste” feature will enter it for you.
  • Create playlists in the cloud to make personal lists of links, then use Open URL to add them to your Favorites (and from there to your Home screen, etc). Both Box.net (upgraded accounts only) and Dropbox let you get direct links to files that can be used with Open URL, and are perfect places to store your custom playlists.

We hope this enhances your enjoyment of Kinoma Play! And if you have any questions or comments, please let us know in our forum.

Can’t remember where you stopped? Kinoma Play does!

January 5th, 2010

Kinoma Play is chock full of little niceties that customers really appreciate. We’d need a 20-foot-tall product page to list them all, so instead we like to talk about them here.

For example, did you know that Kinoma Play automatically remembers where you stopped playing something so you don’t have to?

This is a super-convenient way to nibble on long-form content like podcasts and audiobooks as you have time — nibble while you shop, nibble while you work out, nibble while you drive (with audio-only content, please!).

History continued

This feature works great with History, another handy Kinoma Play feature.

Choose History on the Home screen for a list of everything you’ve listened to lately, and then choose an item to continue right where you left off.

Phone interruptions? No problem

This feature also lets you auto-continue after you make or receive a phone call.

Kinoma Play automatically pauses what you’re playing and then automatically resumes it when the call completes, slowly fading up the volume as it does. Smooooth!

Feature focus: Flights

October 1st, 2009

Kinoma Play is one of the few products you can buy that’s not only an incredible value right from the start, but actually becomes an even better value with time.

Sure, the initial purchase might’ve been because Kinoma Play is the best way to YouTube on phones, or because of the incredible Kinoma Guide, because of it’s elegant Twitter app, or hundreds of other great features.

But the benefits don’t stop when you purchase. Frequent, useful updates mean that Kinoma Play’s YouTube support keeps getting better, Kinoma Guide keeps getting bigger, and apps like Twitter keep getting great new features — free!

Flights

Flights is a recent addition, and a great example of how we keep adding value.

Kinoma Play is primarily known as a great way to connect with content, but we also care deeply about connecting people. That’s the driver behind Kinoma Play’s rich sharing features, and its “social” apps like Twitter and Facebook.

One of the nicest ways of connecting with other people is in person. That often means air travel. Unfortunately, it’s a nightmare to get up-to-date flight information with your phone’s web browser.

Kinoma Play’s Flights app fixes that.

Search

Searching for a flight couldn’t be simpler.

flights-search

Once you’ve found a flight, Kinoma Play displays its current status.

flights-result

Share

Need to share the flight status with somebody who doesn’t have Kinoma Play?

Just choose Share to send the flight status via SMS or email.

Track

If you’ll need to check the same flight again, choose Track Flight.

Tracked flights are added to Flights‘ main screen, making it easy to get the latest flight info with a touch.

“Untrack” flights by choosing the flight and then Untrack Flight.

Delays

Finally, Flights provides a convenient summary of nationwide delays.

Enjoy!

Next time you’re waiting for a flight, remember to check out Flights. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you!

Feature focus: App Store – The best way to find, try and buy Windows Mobile apps

August 5th, 2009

There’s been a lot of talk about app stores lately.

Why? Because they’re the funnest, fastest, most convenient way to find, try and buy apps, games and utilities for your phone.

When we decided to make THE killer app store, it made sense to partner with THE place to get smartphone apps — MobiHand.

Feature focus: Box.net – Cloud media playback, sharing and more

July 28th, 2009

As you know, we keep adding great new features and apps. One of my current faves is Box.net, which you can use for what we call “cloud media playback and sharing”.

It’s like having a magic Storage Card that lives in the web, and is also accessible from your PC. And since this is Kinoma Play, it’s easy, convenient, and “just works” like you’d expect.

box.net-logo

Also, just by signing up in Kinoma Play you get a gigabyte of cloud media storagefree! — to use however you like, with Kinoma Play, your PCs, or both. That’s enough space for over 250 songs, or over 3,000 2MP photos!

With the Box.net app you can do things like:

  • Upload your favorite songs for anytime, anywhere streaming
  • Create photo albums in the cloud — it’s your own personal Flickr!
  • Play podcasts and videos without using valuable space on your phone
  • Easily move media between your phone and PC
  • Share files and folder with friends

Sign up and claim your free gigabyte of cloud storage!

It’s super-easy, and takes just seconds:

  • Go to Apps > Box.net

box.net-sign-up

  • Click Sign Up to enter your email address and choose a Box.net password

box.net-email-password

That’s all there is to it! You’ll receive a confirmation email from Box.net with more info about the service.

Upload media from your phone

Uploading music, podcasts, video and photos from your phone to Box.net is a breeze — just choose Media > Send > Box.net.

box.net-upload-picture

Uploading other kinds of media works exactly the same, and (as you can see) is just as easy:

box.net-upload-music

You can upload media to Box.net as a convenient way to transfer it to your PC, make a backup of irreplaceable photos (even if there’s no PC in sight!), and share with friends and family.

Download media to your phone

Downloading is just as simple — play anything from your Box.net account, and choose Media > Download.

box.net-download-music

Kinoma Play will let you choose whether to store it on the phone itself or your Storage Card.

You can download media from Box.net as a convenient way to transfer it from your PC, get a local copy of your media for flights and other situations where you won’t have network access, and to get files dropped by friends and family into one of your Box.net shared folders.

Create, Delete, Share and Unshare folders

A great feature of the Box.net app is that you can do most folder management tasks right from your phone! For example, here’s the default set of folders you get when you sign up:

box.net-mybox

To create a new folder, open the menu pod to show the Box.net application menu…

box.net-menu

…choose New Folder, give it a name and let Box.net know if it should be public.

box.net-new-folder

From the screenshot you can see that mine is private, but after you create a folder you can always privately share it with friends and family.

box.net-share-folder

Enjoy!

Box.net comes installed, so you can find it in Apps and as a standalone icon on a Home screen.

Try it out, and we think you’ll agree that Kinoma Play is the best way to Box on mobile.
