New Kinoma Play update: Yelp, Google Reader and Flights apps

Whew! Another week, another free update for Kinoma Play customers. How do we do it? Magical elves. It turns out Kinoma Play is what they do when they’re not making Christmas!

Yelp

The easiest way to find the best local businesses — everything from restaurants to dentists to mechanics and lots more — is now built right into Kinoma Play.

Fun fact: Yelp is Kinoma Play’s first location-aware app! If your phone supports GPS, just choose Nearby to find everything near you, or check “Use GPS Location” when you Search. In another first, Yelp is the first Kinoma Play app to feature tap-to-dial. Once you find the business you can call itmap it and even share it via SMS and email.

A full feature focus article on Yelp is coming soon. Until then, don’t let that stop you from diving in and enjoying Yelp today.

Google Reader

Recently we introduced a great feed reader app called News to Kinoma Play. A great addition to be sure, but then we heard from Google Reader users who wanted to play, too.

Google Reader users, your wish is granted. Not only can you able to read your subscriptions (including Starred and Shared items), but the Search command uses Google Blog Search to let you search the content of all blogs (vs. just blogs you’ve subscribed to)!

Following in Google’s footsteps, we’ve labelled this first release a “beta” so that we can get it to you ASAP. If you use Google Reader with Kinoma Play, please let us know what you think.

Flights

The new Flights app lets you search for flights and review U.S. airport delays. It couldn’t be simpler:

Once you find your flight, you can see its departure and arrival information. Then with a touch, you can share that via SMS and/or email, or choose Track Flight to add it to the main Flights screen.

What do you think?

We’re super-excited to bring you Kinoma Play’s first location-based app, and new features like touch-to-call. Enjoy!

Looking forward to trying out the Google Reader app! Great program!

Absolutely amazing! Fast track to becoming the most necessary app for WinMo. (A way to tell the time while it’s running would still be REALLY nice. Hint, hint.)

  3. At least two of these seem that they might be pointless outside the US. I don’t enjoy having to upgrade the core app just to have the option of downloading something of no use to me. Are there any updates or fixes to Kinoma itself?

    • Every update includes fixes, but if they’re not described in the announcement then they generally fix edge cases that only affect a handful of customers. If Kinoma Play’s working great for you, and you don’t find the new apps interesting, you’re free to not-update. (OTOH, it takes less than a minute for Kinoma Play to update itself.)

OK, what am I missing? I installed the Google Reader app but can’t figure out how to implement it in the News reader.

    • To use the Google Reader app, you’ll open Google Reader itself (vs. News). If the Google Reader app isn’t on one of your Home screens, you can find it in Apps.

I just wanted to submit, that since you have added the Google Reaer app, Kinoma is now the BEST podcast player for Windows mobile. When you add the RSS of a podcast to the google reader website, you are able to play that Podcast directly on the phone using the google reader application…very cool!!!!
I think this is worth mentioning in your blog post by the way!

  7. […] info over at the Kinoma blog. To get the new apps, first get the latest update of Kinoma Play, then choose “Get apps” […]

  8. Ian says:

Does this update apply to Palm OS Kinoma player as well?

  9. John says:

I really dig the google reader support, but there are two issues I have:

    1. When I read the an article I it shows it as marked read in Kinoma, as it should, but they remain as unread when I go to google reader on the web.

    2. I really like to view my items from old to newest so I can see items in the proper sequence. Google reader on the web lets me do that, but I see no option to do it in Kinoma.
